I’d like to comment about new technology.
We have implemented a new HD acquisition format for the press junkets. It has the following technical call outs:
- Format: XDcamHD
- Wrapper: Quicktime (.mov) OR Avid (.mxf) (standard is .mov. A utility is available online to re-wrap to .mxf…If asked the operator can record native .mxf)
- 50 Mbps 4:2:2 Long-GOP Full-Raster
- 1080i 60 resolution
So that we all can understand it:
- We hand off Compact Flash cards with the material on it
- I give it to my editor who edits Final Cut Pro or Avid along with the spec sheet
- He/She says “THANK YOU!!! It’s about time”

Recently I received a phone call from a client, frantic that their RED camera wasn’t working & they needed a solution, fast. They were on their way to a green screen shoot in Santa Barbara. We took a look at the LCS warehouse to see what we could come up with on short notice. There were a few requirements that we couldn’t get around. The footage had to be captured in HD, it had to be a solid-state media & not recorded to tape, and the kit needed to be put together quickly (did I mention that already?). At our fingertips was the new Sony PMW-EX3, the Convergent Design Flash XDR & an HD LCD monitor. The client already had several high-speed compact flash cards they were going to use with the RED camera. Would the same cards work with the Flash XDR? Why, yes - they worked flawlessly. Fifteen minutes later the client was on the way to Santa Barbara with a turn-key green screen camera package. Twenty Four hours later they returned glowing about how easy it was to use the EX3 and Flash XDR and how great the footage looked and how happy the editor is with what they captured and how easy it is to do business with LCS and on and on.
